Artist Workshop with Bill Ball: Goin’ big with Handbuilding

Join us for an extended Saturday workshop with Bill Ball, a long-time Artist, studio member, Instructor and friend to ICCGS.  Bill’s workshop will demonstrate his unique hand-building techniques, including slabs to build larger vessels.  During Bill’s demonstration, he will talk participants through his creation of a project – which will demonstrate in detail how he builds and how he creates his unique finishing techniques.  This workshop is for all skill levels, beginners will enjoy the detailed instruction and assisted workshop session and advanced students will enjoy learning these unique techniques created by Bill.

Participants will use the workshop session to create their own larger vessel using these same techniques, with help and feedback from Bill himself.  Enrollment in this workshop includes: instruction, clay and firing of one vessel measuring up to 7x7x7.

Workshop Outline:

9:30 – 11:30 – Demonstration on building with slabs, tips and tricks to building big with hand-building.

11:30 – 12:00 – Lunch Break

12:00 – 4:00-  Hands On : Creating a vessel using learned techniques.  Each participant will create one vessel up to 7x7x7.

Cost: $50/person (2024 Friends of the Center get a 10% discount)

MORE ABOUT BILL: Bill Ball comes with decades of experience in education.  He taught Art education and Ceramics to High School students in our area for over 55 years: with 15 years of Art Education at Jefferson High School and 18 years as the Ceramic Instructor at Washington High School.  Bill also teaches a class here at the center for advanced students.

Students will receive: Instruction and supplies to create a vessel up to 7x7x7. ICCGS will provide tools.  Projects will be fired and ready for pickup 3 weeks later.

Register

Pre-registration online is required for classes and most workshops.  Kids ages 8 and under MUST be accompanied by an adult.  Students’ work will be available for pickup 3 weeks after the end of their session/workshop. Please note that you will not be emailed or called to pick up your work.  All remaining projects will be discarded after 60 days.

What to wear: Students must wear closed toed shoes for safety and ceramic wheel students should wear clothes they do not mind getting messy.

Cancellation policy: ICCGS reserves the right to cancel sessions due to the minimum enrollment not being met.  In that event, participants will be notified and credit for a future class/workshop credit will be given in the form of a certificate.  Participants may cancel their session for future class credits 7 days/ 1 week before the class/workshop begins.  You may email us at [email protected] about your cancellation.

Weather:  If your workshop is scheduled to be outside, you will be given the option to work inside, or take home a project.

All classes and workshops are held at: Iowa Ceramics Center and Glass Studio, located in the NewBo district in the Cherry Building at 329 10th Avenue Southeast in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  The center is located on the first floor in Suite 117.  Please enter the building through the 10th Avenue side of the building.
