Artist Workshop with Karen Moorhead: Creating with Texture Mats

In this workshop, Karen will demonstrate her hand-building techniques of slab-building primary forms with textured slabs. Her technique helps to keep textures intact while building unique shapes like bottles and trays. In the second half of the workshop, Karen will demonstrate pulling a textured mat to gain the best impression. She will also show students how to create their textured mats, including what materials to use for best impressions and how to develop a composition of your textured mat. Each student will have the opportunity to create two 10” x 10” textured mats.

Workshop Outline:

9:30 – 11:30 – Building with Textured Slabs, Tips and tricks to building cleanly with textures.

11:30 – 12:00 – Lunch Break

12:00 – 2:00-  Hands On : Creating Texture Mats.  Each participant will create two 10 x 10 inch textured mats and learn how to use the mats effectively.

About the Instructor: Karen Moorhead received BFA in Metals from Drake University, and has been working in clay for over 17 years! With an eye for detail, precision, and a love for nature, Karen’s work captures her background as a metal smith and her appreciation for the natural world. A long time studio member, we are so excited to have Karen teach her techniques!

Students will need to bring: notebook, items to press into clay for the texture slab (such as flowers leaves, items will be pressed into the ½ slab of clay)

Students will receive: Supplies to create 2 of their own texture mats (10” x 10”).  ICCGS will provide all tools.  Mats will be bisqued fired and ready for pick up 2 weeks later.

Pre-registration online is required for classes and most workshops.  Kids ages 8 and under MUST be accompanied by an adult.  Students’ work will be available for pickup 3 weeks after the end of their session/workshop. Please note that you will not be emailed or called to pick up your work.  All remaining projects will be discarded after 60 days.

What to wear: Students must wear closed toed shoes for safety and ceramic wheel students should wear clothes they do not mind getting messy. 

Cancellation policy: ICCGS reserves the right to cancel sessions due to the minimum enrollment not being met.  In that event, participants will be notified and credit for a future class/workshop credit will be given in the form of a certificate.  Participants may cancel their session for future class credits 7 days/ 1 week before the class/workshop begins.  You may email us at [email protected] about your cancellation.

Weather:  If your workshop is scheduled to be outside, you will be given the option to work inside, or take home a project.

All classes and workshops are held at: Iowa Ceramics Center and Glass Studio, located in the NewBo district in the Cherry Building at 329 10th Avenue Southeast in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  The center is located on the first floor in Suite 117.  Please enter the building through the 10th Avenue side of the building.
