Empty Bowls Project with Marion Arts Festival
April 27 at 10:00 am - May 29 at 4:00 pm
This year, the Marion Arts Festival is a virtual event! The traditional Empty Bowls sale will be greatly missed. But you can participate! Instead of students making bowls in their art classes and sold at the festival to raise money for local food banks, we’re asking you to make an Empty Bowl for the festival to sell next year! And make it from the comfort of your own home!
The Iowa Ceramics Center and Glass Studio (ICCGS) and Marion Arts Festival have created Empty Bowl Take & Create Kits, sponsored by Veridian Credit Union. Over the lifetime of the Empty Bowls sale, more than $105,000 has been raised and donated to area pantries.
With our Empty Bowl Take & Create Kits you create and decorate a bowl at home and return it to ICCGS to be fired and clear glazed. The bowl will then be sold at the 2022 Marion Arts Festival Empty Bowls sale. All the proceeds raised from the sale of the bowls will go to support area food banks and continue our amazing community tradition of support community through the arts.
Beginning Tuesday April 27th at 9 am kits will be available to order online. Additional kits will be added every Tuesday morning through May 29th. These kits are free to the public and limited to one per person.
- After registration, participants can pick up their kits at ICCGS, located in the Cherry Building in Cedar Rapids. Empty Bowl Kits will be located inside the main entry door on a shelf labeled “Empty Bowl Kits”. Please note the hours of operation are as follows: Monday closed, Tuesday-Thursday 10am – 8pm, Friday-Sunday 10am – 4pm)
- All finished bowls must be returned to ICCGS by May 30, 2021 for firing. Finished bowls should be dropped off on the shelf inside the main entry door labeled “Empty Bowls for Firing”. All finished bowls will be donated to the Marion Art Festival 2022 Empty Bowl Fundraiser.
Every Empty Bowl Kit include: a ball of Clay, bowl form, paint brush, scratch tool, 3 colors of glazes and instructions.
