In this workshop, students will learn various underglaze transfer techniques. Students will learn to create underglaze image transfers on leather hard slabs and create unique forms. The instructor will work with students step by step from image creation to final form! Using the image transfer techniques students will create tiles and slab vases in this workshop with approximately 5 pounds of clay provided. No experience is necessary for this hands on workshop.

9:00-11:30 – Transfer Demo, Students design and create transfer images
11:30-12:30 – Lunch Break (please bring your own lunch or visit the NewBo Marketplace)
12:30-4:00 – Transfer images to Slabs, create tiles and vase, underglaze wash and glaze Demo
Visiting Instructor: Kayanna Nelson
As an artist, educator and entrepreneur. Kayanna Nelson creates graphically illustrated clay by blending her two passions: graphic design and ceramics. Kayanna surrounds herself with color and texture everyday working as a freelance illustrator and yarn dyer in her Cedar Rapids studio.
Cost: $75/person
Supplies provided: 5 pounds of terracotta, white transfer slip, newsprint, underglazes, templates, rolling pins. Please note that firing cost is not included.
Students need to bring: Sketchbook, Drawings and/or Designs you’d like to transfer, Hair Dryer or heat gun, Sponges (small), Underglaze, Designer Liners or Slip Trailers for underglaze, Paint Brushes (small and 1” / 2” for slip), Ribs (wood or plastic are best), Needle Tool, Felting Knife, Pony rollers, Scissors and Pencils

Pre-registration online is required for classes and most workshops. Kids ages 8 and under MUST be accompanied by an adult. Students’ work will be available for pickup 3 weeks after the end of their session/workshop. Please note that you will not be emailed or called to pick up your work. All remaining projects will be discarded after 60 days.
What to wear: Students must wear closed toed shoes for safety and ceramic wheel students should wear clothes they do not mind getting messy. Masks are mandatory in the studi.
Cancellation policy: ICCGS reserves the right to cancel sessions due to the minimum enrollment not being met. In that event, participants will be notified and credit for a future class/workshop credit will be given in the form of a certificate. Participants may cancel their session for future class credits 72 hours/ 3 days before the class/workshop begins. You may email us at [email protected] about your cancellation.
Weather: If your workshop is scheduled to be outside, you will be given the option to work inside, or take home a project.
All classes and workshops are held at: Iowa Ceramics Center and Glass Studio, located in the NewBo district in the Cherry Building at 329 10th Avenue Southeast in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The center is located on the first floor in Suite 117. Please enter the building through the 10th Avenue side of the building.
